De Scala, Kortrijk
The “Unie der Zorgelozen” is a social-artistic performing company with a rich history. Their residency home is De Scala Theatre Hall. Built in 1907 and initially used as a hospital during the First World War, this hall was converted into a renowned ballroom known as “De Scala”. With its upper gallery and organ, it became rapidly the pumping heart of a vibrant neighbourhood in an ever-changing environment.
The conversion offers De Scala the modern comfort it deserves and stands as a low-energy building. Without losing its authentic character, the original function of this former dance hall as a festive meeting place and as a popular cultural and artistic centre is now fully restored.
